Our approach to training racehorses is a truly individual one that is bespoke to each horse in our care. Whether a horse is a classic contender or a low-grade handicapper we will leave no stone unturned when it comes to unlocking each horse’s greatest potential. Thanks to Bryan’s wealth of experience, together with Vicky’s holistic and therapeutic approach to horse health and Beth’s scientific and modern thinking, all bases are covered when it comes to the art that is training racehorses.
An Experienced Eye for Talent
Over the years, Bryan has demonstrated time after time his talent for unlocking the potential in a horse and has achieved incredible success with horses that other trainers might have passed over. It is thanks to his patience, belief, eye for talent and horsemanship that has enabled him to win with horses that had previously been written off or might never have won a race, whether that be a handicap with a filly for an owner breeder or a Group 1 with a horse that has been quietly and carefully brought on to win at the highest level. Bryan was once labelled the best 2yo trainer in the North by a top judge and has demonstrated his keen eye for a good 2yo over and over again. With 3 Royal Ascot 2yo winners and further 2yo Black Type Race successes with horses he bought as yearlings and nurtured himself there is no better man to train a 2yo.
One of Bryan’s favourite mantras is that ‘you must keep the speed’ in each horse. This is something he learnt during his time with Champion Jump’s trainer Fred Winter and is something that he has built his training career on. It doesn’t matter if a horse is a staying chaser or a five-furlong ‘speed machine’ a successful racehorse will always need that ‘kick’ to go on and win a race. Bryan makes no secret of the fact that he loves the speed of the sprinters but he has been equally successful with middle distance and staying horses demonstrated by a French Classic Winner and a 2nd in the Northumberland Plate.
Hands on Horsemanship
Ours is a family business and Bryan, Vicky and Beth are very much hands on when it comes to the managing the horses in their care so that nothing goes unnoticed. If you decide to put your horse in training with Bryan, he or she will be treated as an individual and won’t be forgotten among huge numbers. We view every horse as important as another and will go the extra distance to care for and nurture each one. Our wonderful facilities enable us to tailor each horse’s training program to suit their physicality and temperament with none of the worries that other trainers face in busy commercial training centres. We also make sure that each horse is enriched during their training, whether that be with time in the field, hand grazing twice a day, picking gorse or herbs for every horse to chew on or simply getting to know each horse well enough to know when to change things up for them, we will make sure that each horse is happy and healthy.
