Bryan Smart has built an enviable reputation as a top-class trainer. After 12 successful years training in Lambourn, Bryan returned to his Yorkshire roots in 2002 along with two essential team members, wife Vicky and daughter Beth after purchasing the historic stables at Hambleton House. With 36 Group and Listed winners including 3 consecutive 2yo black type winners at Royal Ascot, the Prix De L’Abbaye (Group 1) and more recently the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes (Group 1) with Alpha Delphini in 2018, Bryan has returned Hambleton House back to its former glory. Vicky is an Equine Sports Therapist/Vet Physio and also manages the business, while Beth achieved a First Class Honours in Equine Science before taking over as Assistant Trainer in 2021 and this is truly a family affair with all eyes set on a successful future training many more winners.
Hambleton and the surrounding area is steeped in racing history and the main yard at Hambleton House still retains many original features of the period. Since moving in we have modernised and developed the yard into a first-class training establishment with excellent facilities including 76 large airy stables, two horse-walkers, private grass and all-weather gallops, indoor and outdoor arenas, a cold-water Jacuzzi Spa, solarium, on-site physio, off-road hacking plus dozens of turnout paddocks. Due to our prime location with numerous racecourses situated less than an hour from the yard, together with our top-class facilities and attention to detail, we are proud to be able to provide a relaxed, healthy environment for the horses to be trained in.
Bryan is always on the lookout for the next superstar and has an exceptional eye for a horse having bought relatively cheap yearlings and produced them to win races at the highest level. While he is known for loving speed and has an excellent record with sprinters, he also enjoys finding the key to horse that might have fallen out of love with the game. His wealth of experience together with his patient and holistic approach to training allows him to keep the horses sweet and enjoying their career ensuring they are allowed to mature at their own pace whilst keeping them fit and healthy, both physically and mentally. With this approach he aims to bring out the best in every horse in his care whatever their level of ability.
